Steven Turano, a socially inept band enthusiast, is contemplating suicide. His intentions take a turn when Clarence, an eccentric newcomer at school, becomes his friend. This newfound friendship encourages Steven to step out of his shell, leading to improved connections with his father, peers, and educators. The two boys develop a close friendship as Clarence uses imaginative methods to help lift Steven out of his depression.
