In 1960s Australia, former convict Wally Mellish aspires to lead a peaceful life with his girlfriend Beryl. However, their tranquility is shattered when a visit from two police officers leads to a misunderstanding that escalates rapidly. Wally, Beryl, and her child find themselves barricaded in their home, encircled by armed police who mistakenly believe Wally is holding them hostage. As the situation spirals out of control, it attracts significant media attention, and Wally unintentionally becomes a figurehead for the anti-war movement amidst the chaos.
