In 1970, as Black Sabbath records their debut album, heralding the dawn of Heavy Metal, Hera Karlsdottir is born on the floor of a cowshed at her family’s farm in the Icelandic countryside. Her childhood is carefree until a tragic accident claims the life of her older brother, for which she holds herself responsible. In her sorrow, she finds comfort in the somber tones of Heavy Metal and aspires to become a rock star. As time passes on the snow-covered farm overshadowed by a foreboding mountain, Hera dedicates herself to practicing the guitar and dreams of starting a band. Now in her early twenties, Hera is a rebellious and misunderstood troublemaker, constantly finding herself in difficult situations. She longs to escape and explore the world but inevitably finds herself back at her own doorstep. When her childhood friend returns with plans to marry her and a young priest arrives in the farming community, the course of her destiny begins to shift. Hera must mature, discover her own voice, and come to terms with the fact that she cannot run away forever.
